Women’s Golf Fifth After Two Rounds at Pirate Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Grace Holcomb and Julia Baeumken each posted a two-over-par 36-hole score as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team stands in fifth place on the first day 54-hole Pirate Collegiate Classic at Greenville Country Club, hosted by East Carolina Monday morning and afternoon.

Holcomb took advantage of the par-72, 6,072-yard course's par three and five holes, posting all four first round birdies on the short and long holes. The sophomore posted three of her four birdies on the front nine stretch, her last nine holes of the round to finish at one-under-par (71). Holcomb settled into the top-ten with a second round three-over-par (75) effort. Posting two birdies in her second 18-hole stretch, the sophomore closed her round with a birdie on the par-five, 425-yard ninth hole to claim a tie for ninth place in the field.

Baeumken posted inverse scores of Holcomb in each round, but tied her teammate for ninth with a 36-hole total of two-over par (146). The freshman birdied the 16th and 18th holes to close her first nine holes. Baeumken recovered from a rough stretch late in her round to birdie the ninth hole, finishing at three-over-par through one round. After an up-and-down first nine holes, Baeumken conquered the front half of the course, posting a three-under-par (33) to move up eight spots on the leaderboard. The freshman made her biggest move with a birdie on the par-four, 366-yard fifth hole. Her birdie was only one of eight through 36 holes and currently stands as the third-hardest hole of the tournament.

Ava Romfo stands just outside the top-ten golfers with a four-over-par (148), good for a tie for 14th place. Starting her day on the tenth hole, the sophomore tamed the front nine stretch with four birdies including one on the tournament's fourth-hardest hole, the par-four, 353-yard fourth hole. Romfo's three-under-par front nine score lifted her to a one-under-par (71) first round finish. The sophomore posted three birdies in a five-over-par (77) second round effort to settle as the third-lowest Spartan score of the day.

Graduate student Nicole Lu is tied for 21st in the field of 63 after posting a five-over-par (75) score on round one and bouncing back with a two-over-par (74) effort during round two. She made four birdies throughout the day.

Competing as an individual, Alexandra Phelps posted a seven-over-par (151) 36-hole score which stands in a tie for 21st place. The freshman posted three birdies on the front nine, including the fourth hole, in the first round. Her two-over-par (74) through 18 holes placed her just outside the top-ten in 12th place. She also made an eagle during round two on the 425-yard hole nine.
