GREENSBORO, N.C. – A Southern Conference (SoCon) clash between UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer and East Tennessee State University saw two strong sides fighting for the number one spot in the league ending in a 1-1 draw.
The Spartans entered the match No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, No. 6 in the South Region. They are also No. 13 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll and No. 21 in the College Soccer News poll.
How it Happened:
Two strong sides took to the pitch with a full crowd and did not disappoint. UNCG held possession of the ball for the majority of the first half with a number of dangerous plays. The first opportunity for either team came in the ninth minute of the half when the Spartans'
J.C. Ngando sent a shot just wide the ETSU goal. UNCG continued their high pressure with another dangerous opportunity that came from
Steven Hernandez who struck the ball on frame, forcing the Buccaneers' goalkeeper to make the save.
After a free kick near midfield by the Buccaneers, Kieran Richards picked up the rebound and sailed the ball under the crossbar to give ETSU a 1-0 advantage in the 26
th minute. Both teams tallied three shots a piece in the first half, while the Spartans had three corner kicks.
UNCG pushed for an equalizer and ETSU's defense was quick with counter attacks. A dangerous opportunity for the Spartans came in the 63
rd minute of the match when a penalty was called against ETSU inside the 18-yard box. Ngando stepped up to put it away, but the Buccaneers' goalkeeper Cole Hunter was there to stop the shot.
As the energy climbed in the stadium, Ngando beat a few defenders down the left flank and crossed it inside the 18-yard box.
Ismail El Harchi tracked the ball and headed it to the back left corner for the equalizer in the 87
th minute.
