RALEIGH, N.C. - Nick Lyerly fired a 36-hole total of two-under-par (142), lifting him into the top-ten golfers on the leaderboard, as the UNCG Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf team competed in the 54-hole Wolfpack Intercollegiate at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State on Saturday.
Lyerly battled through a tough first nine holes of the opening round at the par-72, 7,287-yard course and posted a birdie on the par-five, 549-yard 15th hole, the tournament's fourth-hardest hole. The graduate student turned the corner late in his final nine holes, carding back-to-back birdies on the par-five, 589-yard seventh hole and the par-three, 177-yard eighth. The rally led Lyerly to an even-par (72) first round finish. Lyerly catapulted into the top-ten thanks to a two-under (70) second round effort where he posted four birdies. The graduate student posted birdies on two par-five holes in the second round including the par-five, 631-yard eleventh hole. Lyerly finished his last seven holes one-under-par, lifting him into a tie for seventh place.
Randall Hudson posted a six-over-par (78) score with his first-round effort. The junior bolstered the Spartans' second round effort with a one-over-par (73) scorecard. Hudson carded four birdies, three on the front side, with back-to-back birdies on the par-three, 163-yard sixth hole and the seventh hole. Hudson finished with a 36-hole total of seven-over-par (151).
Noah Connor posted three birdies in his first round five-over-par (77) effort. The senior overcame adversity on his first nine holes as he carded birdies on two of his last three holes. Connor tamed two long holes down the stretch with a birdie on the par-four, 490-yard ninth hole and the eleventh which closed Connor's first round. The senior posted two birdies in his second round, posting a back nine score of one-under-par (35). Connor's two-over-par (74) second round score placed him in a tie with Hudson for UNCG's second-lowest 36-hole score.
Competing as an individual,
Symon Balbin posted a 36-hole total score of three-over-par (147). Balbin carded two front-nine birdies as part of his first round two-over-par effort (74). The senior also posted two birdies on the front side in the second round on his way to a one-over-par (73) effort.
The Spartans stand in 13th place through 36 holes with a team total score of 20-over-par (596). UNCG stands one shot behind Elon for 12th place, two shots behind East Carolina for eleventh, and three shots behind Richmond for tenth.
