Four Spartans Score in Women’s Soccer 4-0 Shutout Over Wofford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team shut out its second-straight Southern Conference (SoCon) opponent with a 4-0 win over Wofford on Sunday.

Four different Spartans scored in the clean sheet, which brings their total to six shutouts. The victory also moved them up to fifth in the SoCon standings with one more weekend of conference play.

With the win, UNCG is now outscoring SoCon opponents 12-5.

From Head Coach Michael Coll
"We had a great weekend scoring seven goals in two games, which you don't see much in the SoCon. I am very happy with our balance of where the goals came from in both games. The icing on the cake was our fourth goal. It was a fantastic team goal. Before this weekend, we've always had the ability for that offensive output and now it is coming to fruition, which is nice."

How it Happened:
The first 10 minutes of the game had both teams fighting for possession and settling into their styles of play. Freshman Ava Kiss had the first two opportunities of the game, with one on net.

In the 19th minute senior Gabi Santora took the third corner kick for the Spartans which was cleared out to Nadia Wilson. Wilson got her laces on the ball, sending her shot to the left post, which deflected off the inside of the frame and was sent back across the goal to senior Eliza Radoll who finished the play. She collected the rebound and found the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

A minute later, UNCG was on the offensive attack with Kiss sending a through ball to senior Nadia Wilson just outside the 18-yard box. A quick glance up and Wilson picked up speed to take the pass and strike it past the sliding Wofford goalkeeper, for a 2-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, freshman goalkeeper Emma Malone made her first save of the half from a strike free kick that was 25 yards out. The Spartans put one more tally on the board before the end of the half with a successful penalty kick taken by Santora in the 32nd minute, placing the ball into the right side of the goal and giving her team a three-goal lead.

Twenty-three seconds into the second half, Brubaker turned while taking on a Wofford defender and crossed the ball to Kiss. Kiss got just enough on it to squeeze the ball over the line for a 4-0 advantage.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz, who started the second half, made three big saves in the second half to keep Wofford from putting a goal on the board to hold on for a 4-0 win. The four goals were the most scored for the Spartans since UNCG's 5-0 win over The Citadel on October 10, 2021 at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

By the Numbers:
  • Radoll scored her first goal of the season and third career tally.
  • Santora tallied her third goal of the season and sixth career goal.
  • Wilson netted her second goal in as many games, for her third goal of her career.
  • She also chipped in an assist.
  • Kiss registered her second goal and third helper of the season.
  • Brubaker's assist was her second of the season.
  • Spartan's goalkeepers Emma Malone and Abby Buchholz split time in net for a combined shutout.
  • UNCG outshot Wofford 16-9.

UNCG: 7-7-2, 3-3-1 SoCon
Wofford: 7-7-1, 2-3-1 SoCon

On the Spartans' next road trip
"They (The Citadel and Mercer) are two different teams, so we have to be able to answer many different challenges. But, we are going in in a great place because of the domination that we showed this weekend, so we are going to be ultra-convinced that we can put our best foot forward."

Up Next:
The Spartans conclude the regular season with their final road trip, first going to Charleston, South Carolina to battle The Citadel Friday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. UNCG will then head to Macon, Georgia to face Mercer on Sunday, October 23.
