Wofford Gets Past Volleyball, 3-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Taylor Robertson posted a team-high eight kills as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped a Sunday afternoon Southern Conference (SoCon) contest to Wofford, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21).

Wofford claimed an early 9-3 advantage in the first set to force a Spartans timeout. UNCG responded with three of the next four points, beginning with Daija Jackson's first of four first-set kills. The Terriers extended their lead to eight points, 16-8, before the Spartans produced another 3-1 rally. Wofford kept their lead at eight points late in the set, 22-14, but the Spartans responded by scoring five of the next six points to force a Wofford timeout. The Terriers posted back-to-back points out of the timeout to claim the first set, 25-14.

The Spartans held the Terriers to a small advantage for much of the first half of the second set. Wofford claimed a three-point lead twice before the Spartans evened the set, 11-11. UNCG followed in the next point to claim one of their three leads in the set, 12-11, off a Mya Wood kill. Wofford scored five of the next six points to reclaim a three-point advantage, 16-13. The Spartans chipped away at the Wofford lead over the ensuing 5-3 rally from the Spartans, 21-20. Both sides traded points before Wofford closed the set with a four-point rally, 25-20.

Wofford claimed an early 10-6 lead to start the third set. Both teams traded the next eight points before Wofford extended their lead to five points to force a UNCG timeout. The Spartans responded with a 5-1 rally out of the timeout, sparked by a kill and block by Elayne Grisbee on back-to-back points. That brought the deficit down to one point, 15-14. Wofford claimed three of the next four points, prompting the Spartans to spend their final timeout. The Spartans rallied out of the timeout a second time in the set, claiming four of the next five points with two service aces to tie the set, 19-19, and force a Wofford timeout. A five-point Wofford rally brought the Terriers to match point. Taylor Robertson posted back-to-back kills to extend the set, but the Terriers responded to claim the win, 25-21.

From Head Coach Corey Carlin
"Tonight was a good lesson for us, particularly that we need to play better defense when we get them out of system. We did do some very good things in the match and played well for long stretches. Our offense was solid, and we did well in the serve and pass game. The difference in the match was their offense being just a bit better than our defense. In our last two matches we've seen the teams picked number 1 and number 2 in the preseason poll, so we know where the bar is set. We want to be playing our best volleyball in November so we'll take some lessons from tonight into our match tomorrow and keeping working toward that goal."
