BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team began its second round of Southern Conference (SoCon) matches with a three-set loss to Samford with set scores of 25-14, 26-24, and 25-17 Friday night inside Pete Hanna Center.
How it Happened
Samford breezed past UNCG during the first set behind a 0.314 hitting percentage and just three errors. The Bulldogs started with a 4-0 lead and the Spartans came within one, 8-7, before Samford went on a 10-1 run for a 10-point lead, 18-8. Samford's 11-point advantage, its largest lead, came on set point, 25-14.
UNCG had its first lead of the match in the second set and took the lead four more times, including at 10-9, before Samford scored five-straight points, 14-10. The Spartans tied it at 15 with a kill from
Taylor Robertson, before Samford saw another string of five points for a 20-15 advantage. UNCG came within two, 20-18, and Samford extended the lead to six, 24-18, as six-straight points from the Spartans forced a tied set at 24. Samford would take the frame, 26-24.
The Bulldogs dominated the third set with a 0.200 hitting percentage, as they held the lead following the Spartans' 2-1 advantage. Late in the set, UNCG scored four-straight points to come within seven, 20-13, but the teams traded points the rest of the way and Samford won 25-17.
