CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team went head-to-head with Western Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament and the Spartans came up with a 2-1 victory.
With the win, the Spartans advance to the SoCon semifinals and will take on the top-seeded Chattanooga.
This is the fourth time in two years that the Spartans and Catamounts faced off, with two of the four being in the quarterfinal round. Earlier this season, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie.
How it Happened:
Western Carolina attacked early taking three shots in the first 15 minutes of play. The Spartans saw two of their own shots in the ninth and 10
th minutes of play.
In the 20
th minute of play, Morgan Brubaker fought through two Catamount defenders and charged into the 18-yard box. She crossed the ball to
Gabi Santora and found
Caroline Woods on the left side of the box. Woods struck the ball with her right foot finding the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Less than five minutes into the second half, UNCG got a corner kick. A dangerous ball was served in by Santora and after some fumbling in the box the Spartan senior
Maddy Gilhool picked up her own rebound to extend their lead to two.
After much back and forth, Western Carolina's second wind came with fifteen minutes left in the match. The Catamounts took a strike from the top of the 18-yard box following a corner kick that was originally cleared. Maggie Lloyd turned and tried to put the ball in the back of the net, but Emma Malone was there for the initial save, before Lloyd put the ball back in to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Catamounts had four more shots before time elapsed and UNCG held on for the 2-1 victory.
From Caroline Woods on the game
"I thought our ability to score quickly again after scoring the first goal is something we've been working on all season and it's shown in the past couple games as well. We adapted very well to the different type of surface being played on and I'm super proud of how we ended the game early."
By the Numbers:
- Woods scored her second goal of the season and eighth of her career.
- Gilhool tallied her eighth goal of the season and 13th of her career.
- Santora notched her sixth assist of the season and 13th of her career.
- The Catamounts outshot the Spartans 14-6.
- Emma Malone made three saves.
