El Harchi’s Goal Secures Men’s Soccer 1-0 Win Over VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team came out on top 1-0 after battling Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at Patchin Field Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans came into the game receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll and sixth in the South region poll. They are also No. 13 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll and No. 22 in the College Soccer News poll.

How it Happened:
The first half showed another strong offensive attack by the Spartans. With ten shots total, UNCG had control of the game straight out of the gate. Seven of their ten shots were on frame, and they took a total of six corner kicks. The Spartan back line held strong as well and limited VMI to just one shot and one corner. Though UNCG had many shots, the Keydets' defense held strong and limited the damage to just a one goal difference by the half time mark.

Graduate student Ismail El Harchi found the back of the net in the 19th minute after J.C. Ngando took an initial shot on net that was saved by the Keydets' Gabe Calhoun. El Harchi was there to find the back of the net for the Spartans, earning his fourth goal in three games, bringing him to a total of six goals on the season.

The Spartans were held to just four shots in the second half while VMI had four of its own.

By the Number:
  • El Harchi had the lone goal of the game, giving him six total on the season.
  • J.C. Ngando tallied his ninth assist of the season, for a career best nine helpers.
  • Spartans' senior goalkeeper Jarrett Payne earned his first clean sheet of the season, the second of his Spartan career.
  • The VMI goalkeeper Gabe Calhoun had eight saves.
