GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gabriela McHugh and
Daija Jackson led the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team with nine kills each as the Spartans fell to Furman Friday night, 3-1, in Fleming Gym with set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 25-12. This was the Spartans' regular season finale.
How it Happened
UNCG tied the first set five times before Furman scored seven-straight points, 14-7. The Spartans came within three, 17-14, but the Paladins responded with three of their own points, 20-14. A 9-5 run in favor of UNCG was not enough as Furman secured set point with a kill by Ava Augustson, 25-23.
Furman dominated the second set with a 0.433 hitting clip. The Paladins opened the set with a 14-4 advantage and kept the lead throughout. UNCG was able to close the deficit to eight, 24-16, but Furman took the second set 25-16.
The Spartans' 0.222 hitting percentage in the third set was the deciding factor for the 25-18 victory, as the Paladins averaged a 0.167 hitting clip. UNCG saw its first lead of the match in the third frame, 2-1. Furman continued to fight back the whole set as there were eight tied scores with the last one at 11. UNCG extended its lead to seven behind a 9-2 run for a 20-13 lead. Both teams scored five more points, but UNCG remained ahead for its first win of the match, 25-18.
Furman held the advantage in the fourth set following a 12-4 run. The Spartans scored two-straight points once in the frame for an eight-point deficit, 18-10. Furman went on a 7-2 run to close the frame, for match point, 25-12.
By the Numbers
- McHugh also had 13 digs and 31 assists for 41 career double-doubles and her 11th of the season.
- Taylor Robertson tallied eight digs and eight kills.
- Ella Voegele registered 16 digs.
- Mya Wood had 11 digs and seven kills.

The Spartans will await their fate in the 2022 SoCon Tournament as conference foes wrap up the regular season on Saturday.
The Tournament begins November14 with the first round, hosted by the No. 8 seed. Following that game, Furman will serve as the host at Timmons Arena in Greenville, South Carolina from November 18-20.
