GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team fell to in-state foe Davidson College Thursday night at Fleming Gym, 84-54.
Akira Wiggins tallied her fifth game with double-figures, scoring a team-best 16 points. This was the fifth time this season that she scored double-digits.
Khalis Cain contributed 13 rebounds, a game high, for her fifth game this season with double-digit boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG opened the game with a 4-0 run including baskets from
Nasia Powell and
Khalis Cain. Both teams traded three pointers before Davidson made two-straight baskets from behind the arc for a 9-7 lead at 7:05. The Wildcats extended the scoring with two layups for a 10-0 run, before the Spartans closed the gap to four, 13-9. A 12-5 run from Davidson concluded the first quarter to hold a 12-point lead, 26-14.
Powell hit the opening basket of the second quarter, her only three pointer of the game, cutting the deficit to nine, 26-17. The Wildcats' offense continued as a 7-2 run extended their lead to 14, 33-19. A three-point basket from
Nitzan Amar and a layup from Cain brought the deficit to ninth, 33-24. The two teams went scoreless for two minutes before they traded baskets until the end of the half with Davidson leading by 10, 39-29.
Davidson saw a lead of 22 twice in the third quarter, with the second coming with 2:10 remaining, 61-39. The Wildcats held a 21-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, 64-43.
The Wildcats scored the first basket of the fourth frame, but the Spartans saw a layup from Cain and a jumper from
Nia Howard to halt the attack and cut the deficit to 19, 66-47. An 11-1 run from Davidson expanded the lead to 29, 77-48. Following eight-straight made free throws, where UNCG went on a 6-2 run, the Wildcats saw a jumper for a 27-point lead, 81-54. Davidson then climbed its way to a 30-point lead to conclude the game, 84-54.
