UNCG Secures Fourth-Straight Victory with 10-1 Win Over GW

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team run-ruled George Washington 10-1 in six innings in the final game of the Spiro Classic on Sunday.

This was the fourth-straight game with seven or more hits, the second game of the season run-ruling a team, and the seventh-straight game with the Spartans hitting at least one home run.

From Head Coach Janelle Breneman on the weekend
"We really hit our stride stringing hits together this weekend. We jumped on teams early and that was something we really focused on after playing last weekend. We capitalized with runners in scoring position and had some really good swings. The good part about our lineup is that we produced all the way through. To put runs on the board is huge for our pitchers in the circle and allows us to relax a little bit more."

RECORDS
UNCG: 5-3
GW: 2-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Spartans chipped away at the Colonials' pitcher tallying a hit in each of the first and second innings.
  • In the bottom of the third with one out, Delaney Cumbie and Makenna Matthijs walked before Maycin Brown homered to right center for a 3-1 advantage for the Spartans.
  • The bases were quickly loaded in the bottom of the fifth and Brown crossed home on a fielder's choice to shortstop, 4-1.
  • Grace Loftin took the third walk of the inning, bringing home another run for a 5-1 lead.
  • Delaney Cumbie's two-out, two-run single to center field scored another two runs, breaking open the game for a 7-1 advantage.

  • Immediately after, Hannah Kincer drove out a blast to left field extending the Spartans' score to 10-1, run-ruling their second opponent of the season.
