Spartans Edge Davidson In Thrilling Tennis Match

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team concluded a busy weekend by edging Davidson, 4-3, in thrilling fashion at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.

Hugh Knapp's three-set victory at No. 3 singles clinched the victory for the Spartans. After losing the first set, 6-1, Knapp rallied to win 6-1 and 6-4. It was the perfect finish for UNCG, which had dropped matches to Gardner Webb on Friday and eighth-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday.

"This is a great finish to a tough weekend," UNCG head men's tennis coach Jeff Trivette said. "We have purposely scheduled tough matches early, to toughen us up. I am a big believer in trial by fire. We are starting to see the results of that tough schedule."

Also capturing singles victories for UNCG were Nico Grewe at No. 1 and Roger Rogowski at No. 4. UNCG's day started by winning the important doubles point. It was a tough battle.

Grewe and Harrison Gwynn won at No. 2 doubles by a 6-2 score. The doubles point came down to a fierce competition at the No. 3 doubles match. Cooper Wyett and Hugh Knapp claimed a 7-5 victory, which enabled UNCG to enter the singles portion of the match needing to win three singles matches.

"Going into the match Grewe and I were focusing on higher first serve percentage and putting pressure on any second serve we received," Gwynn said. "We took some pace off our first serves and focused hitting our spots.

"Also, going into the match, we felt some tension because we knew we had been playing some good tennis but needed to close out the busy weekend with a win to propel us into our conference play starting next weekend. It was a huge sense of relief when we saw Hugh cross the finish line with a big forehand to give us the win."
