UNCG Wins Dorado Beach Collegiate Tournament

DORADO BEACH, Puerto Rico – Florida. Puerto Rico.

Right now, it doesn't matter where the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf team competes because the result has been the same. All the Spartans do is win -- tournament championships.

UNCG made it two for two in spring tournaments by finishing strong to win the Dorado Beach Collegiate Tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans got a double dose of victory as senior Nick Lyerly captured the individual tournament title too.

The Spartans are leaving Puerto Rico with all the awards and lots of confidence.

This was the third individual tournament championship that Lyerly has won during the 2021-22 campaign for the Spartans. His latest triumph is a perfect complement to the Wolfpack Intercollegiate (Oct. 17) and Grandover Collegiate (Oct. 24) titles that the Ben Hogan Award finalist won.

This was Lyerly's seventh career tournament title.

As usual, Lyerly had help as UNCG fired a 277 to finish the tournament at an astounding 29-under par. UNCG started the day trailing Ball State by one stroke. The Spartans were able to overtake the Cardinals and hold off Drexel, who shot a final round 273. Ball State finished seven strokes behind UNCG.

Quotable
UNCG head men's golf coach Terrance Stewart on his team's performance.
"The team played very well with everyone getting it done when it mattered the most. These young men are beginning to realize what they are capable of.  The ride will be fun and it's to be continued. Nick Lyerly is the best player in the country, period. It's an honor to coach him and see what he and the team can accomplish in the future."
