Byrd’s No-Hitter Helps UNCG Soar Past Delaware State

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Special.

On a Sunday afternoon, after canceling a game the day before due to weather, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team created a special moment to put in the record book.

It was not just an 8-0 five-inning run-ruled win over Delaware State.

The Spartans posted their first shutout of the season. It was anything but routine.

Freshman Reese Byrd struck out five batters and tossed her first-collegiate no-hitter. This was the first no-hitter for the Spartans since Stephanie Bryden '19, current UNCG volunteer assistant coach, threw an 8-0 five-inning victory against Virginia on February 24, 2018.
Byrd's performance was the 13th no-hitter in program history.

There's more. There were four home runs during the game. Two each from seniors Delaney Cumbie and Samantha Lagrama.

This was Cumbie's second game of her career with two home runs, while it was Lagrama's first-career multi-home run game. The four home runs are a season-best for UNCG.

Quote from Cumbie
"Our team did a great job as a whole today. It was super awesome to get two home runs to help my team! I also felt that our performance at the plate was able to help Reese feel relaxed so she could go at Delaware State hard and get the no-hitter. This was a great team win for us!"

Quote from Lagrama on the day
"Today was a lot of fun. We squared a lot of balls up today and moved runners when we needed to. We were swinging to do damage and that's when we are at our best. Home runs are always fun but getting it done for my team is so much sweeter."
