GREENSBORO, N.C. – In what would be the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team's third close game of the weekend against Elon, the Spartans ended up on top with a score of 10-9 in eight innings.
Both teams loaded the bases in the eighth and one was bound to come out on top. The game-deciding factor – a walk-off walk for the Spartans.
Elon was kept from scoring a run with a fly ball to center field that
Makenna Matthijs moved quickly to in the top of the eighth.
UNCG immediately responded and put runners in scoring position following a walk from
Blayke Batten and a double by
Grace Loftin.
Jordan Gontram was hit by a pitch. With no outs, Matthijs took a nine-pitch walk to bounce back against the Phoenix for the win.
From Brooklynn Maxwell on the game
"We started the game off flat, however we didn't let that affect how we felt with our swings and kept battling. We came back and fought every inning and succeeded together as a team. I think this win will definitely give our team confidence in each other to start off conference play this weekend against Mercer."
