Spartans Early Lead Not Enough for Top 25 Wolfpack

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to the No. 22 N.C. State Wolfpack, 13-5, in its Tuesday night matchup in Greensboro, N.C.

The Wolfpack took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Spartan error. UNCG answered with three runs of its own. Zack Budzik was walked, followed by a single from Pres Cavenaugh. Freshman Kennedy Jones stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer over the left-field wall.

State tied the game in the top of the second on a wild pitch and then took the lead on a Spartan error. Rowan Watt doubled to left-field and scored on a Wolfpack error to first base. Cavenaugh got on base with a double and then was brought home with a single by Jones.

NC State tied the game at five in the top of the third with two runs. State took a 12-5 lead with four runs in the fifth and three in the seventh. UNCG had men in scoring position with Mitchell Smith being walked and GC Jarman hitting a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the eighth but nothing came of it. The Spartans would fall to the Wolfpack, 13-5.

RHP Hunter Shuey earned his second career start. He pitched two innings, allowed two hits and struck out two batters.

HUNTER SHUEY ON STARTING
"I'm really happy about it. I've been working hard in the offseason and preseason and coach Godwin has seen that so being able to come out here and get my first start just means a lot. Going into it you're nervous for the game, but as I was told 'if you're not nervous, you're not ready'. So after getting that first strikeout I feel like everything just slowed down for me."

UPCOMING
UNCG will head to Boiling Springs, S.C. for a midweek game against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
