CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Samford in a riveting Southern Conference quarterfinal match Thursday evening at the Champions Club.
UNCG fought to the finish. It was a tough ending for a stellar UNCG senior class that included All-SoCon First Team selections
Roger Rogowski and
Nico Grewe. Other seniors for the Spartans are
Hugh Knapp and
Cooper Wyett.
UNCG powered its way to a 3-2 advantage thanks to winning the doubles point and singles victories from Rogowski at No. 4 singles and
Alexander Zuckerman at No. 2 singles. Rogowski finished the season on a five-match winning streak and 11 triumphs.
The Spartans doubles squads of Grewe and Rogowski at No. 1 and Zuckerman and
Christopher Johns at No. 2 captured their matches by 6-3 scores.
Knapp finished the season with a team-best 12 victories. Grewe's 11 wins were tied for second most on the team. Grewe and Rogowski ended the year with six wins at No. 1 singles. This was the second victory of the season for Zuckerman and Johns.
Samford was able to advance to Friday's semifinals by winning the final two singles matches in three-set thrillers to complete the comeback. Overall, Samford won four of the six singles contests to avenge its regular-season setback to UNCG.
