UNCG Hosting A Pair of SoCon Foes This Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team begins a three-match homestand by hosting Mercer in a Southern Conference contest Thursday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. The Spartans will also host Furman on Sunday at 3 p.m.
 
Being in familiar surroundings will be a welcome relief for the Spartans, who have played two of their four home contests on campus. Two other "home" contests were played at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center where UNCG is 2-0.
 
This will be UNCG's first home match since March 6 when it beat Samford.
 
A Look At UNCG
  • The Spartans are 5-12 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.
  • UNCG lost 6-1 to 68th-ranked ETSU last Friday.
  • Hugh Knapp was UNCG's only singles winner against the nationally-ranked Bucs.
  • Knapp has won six straight singles matches for the Spartans at No. 3 singles.
  • Knapp leads UNCG with 10 singles victories.
  • Also earning a victory for UNCG against ETSU was the No. 1 doubles tandem of Nico Grewe and Roger Rogowski.
  • They won, 7-6 (5) to improve to 3-0 as a doubles pair this season.
  • Grewe has nine victories at No. 1 singles.
  • Rogowski has won six singles matches.
  • The doubles tandem of Cooper Wyett and Knapp are 6-3 overall.
 
A Look At Mercer
  • Mercer is 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon.
  • The Bears dropped a 7-0 decision to Furman this past Sunday.
  • Mercer is 0-5 on the road.
  • Prior to the Furman loss, Mercer had won two of three matches, beating Alabama State and The Citadel.
  • In the win over The Citadel, Alexandr Koliev and Marceau Fouilhoux as well as Lucas Wayenburg and David Georgadze were winners in doubles matches.
  • They also all won singles matches against the Bulldogs.
  • Samuel Macleod leads Mercer with 10 singles victories. 
  • Georgadze has nine singles victories and Wayenburg has eight singles wins.
  • Georgadze and Wayenburg has won eight matches together as a doubles tandem.
 
A Look At Furman
  • Furman is 11-7 overall and 3-0 in the SoCon.
  • The Paladins beat Mercer, 7-0, last Sunday in their last outing.
  • Furman features graduate student Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel, who rank 54th nationally as a doubles tandem.
  • The pair won against Mercer along with senior James Roelofse and sophomore Emil Westling to claim the doubles point.
  • Furman won all six singles matches, five in straight sets. 
  • Connel leads Furman with 12 singles victories.
  • Drew Singerman has 11 singles wins for the Paladins.
  • He has won five straight singles matches.
