CULLOWHEE, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team clinched the final series with a quick 5-3 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts on Friday night.
The Spartans are playing for their second series sweep of the season tomorrow. They swept The Citadel earlier this season.
They are also playing for a top four spot in the 2022 Southern Conference Tournament. They are currently tied with Mercer with an 11-9 conference record.

Bott: "Hoppe came in and closed out the game for us. Tell me, what was working for you on the mound?"
Hoppe: "I think everything was working pretty well today. It was all about feeling my zone up and letting my defense play behind me and it worked out well today."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans took the early lead in the first inning.
- A Catamount error would allow Mitchell Smith to reach first and Kennedy Jones to score.
- A double from Dallas Callahan would bring two more across the plate to give the Spartans the 3-0 lead.
- A solo home run from Jones in the second inning would grow the lead to 4-0.
- The Catamounts cut the Spartan's lead in half with two runs in the sixth inning.
- GC Jarman's single in the eighth inning allowed Smith to score to make it 5-2.
- Western Carolina added one in the bottom of the ninth, but the Spartans won 5-3.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jones was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
- Jared Mathewson and Alex Hoppe struck out four batters each.
