UNCG Eyes Fifth-Consecutive Regular Season Title After Split with Samford

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a doubleheader with Samford on Saturday with the regular season title up for grabs tomorrow.
 
In a 7-3 victory during game one, UNCG snapped Samford's six-game home conference streak behind three homers and seven total hits.
 
Maycin Brown crushed a three-run homer to right center in the top of the second to take its second lead, 5-3.
 
Jessie Shipley and Delaney Cumbie each smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to secure the victory.
 
With the three homers, UNCG has now totaled 95 blasts.
 
Samford scored a run in the first and sixth for a 2-0 shutout in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the bases loaded, Samantha Lagrama doubled to right center bringing home Brown and Makenna Matthijs for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Samford answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame on a three-run homer from Tedder.
  • The Spartans concluded the game with three homers, giving the team a home run in each of the last four games.
NOTES
  • The Spartans have hit at least one home run in 43 games this season.
  • This was the 27th game this season with two or more home runs.
  • This was the fifth game with three homers.
  • Matthijs and Brown each had two hits.
  • Matthijs went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and her 53rd double of her career.
  • She is now in sole possession of second place in career doubles.
  • Brown went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, and a walk.
  • Scott struck out five in her 24th complete game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans had the bases loaded twice in the game, in the top of the first and top of the sixth.
  • Samford put up the first run in the bottom of the first with a RBI single from Shurbutt.
  • Tedder singled to third base in the bottom of the sixth for the Bulldogs' second run of the game.
NOTES
  • Jordan Gontram was the only Spartan to have two hits, swinging 2-for-3.
  • Brown and Grace Loftin tallied a hit each.
  • Scott struck out four.

The winner of the series will be the 2022 SoCon Regular Season Champion, earn the number one seed in the tournament next week, and the first-round bye to play on Thursday, May 12.
