Women’s Soccer and VCU Battle to 1-1 Draw

RICHMOND, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team recorded its first draw of the season, a 1-1 tie against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Sunday night at Sports Brackers Stadium.

This was the fourth meeting all-time between the two teams, as the Spartans hold a 2-1-1 mark over the Rams.

By the Numbers:
  • Senior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz made two saves in the first half, while freshman goalkeeper Emma Malone tallied three saves.
  • UNCG was outshot 17-5, as VCU dominated the second half with 11 shots.
  • The Rams had three corner kicks to the Spartans' zero.
How it Happened:
  • 14:19 – A foul was called about 30 yards out and Chloe Lausell took the free kick. Inside the box, a Ram deflected the ball off her head and it ended up in the net as an own goal for a 1-0 advantage for the Spartans.
  • 86:35 – The Spartans were called for a foul close to the near corner and Aisha Maughan crossed it to where Kendyl Sarver could direct it to the back right corner with her head to tie the match at one.
Records:
  • UNCG: 2-1-1, 0-0-0 SoCon
  • VCU: 0-1-3, 0-0-0 A10
Head Coach Michael Coll on the game
"This was a fast, physical game like we expected. VCU is a tough and committed team who have a very successful home record so getting a tie here is an excellent result. We got a bit fortunate with our leading goal in the first half and our defensive shape and complete team effort looked like it was enough to get us the win, but it wasn't meant to be. I think a tie was a fair result because there really wasn't much between the two teams. Like most other teams we are still trying to figure out our best formation and most natural game plans to succeed but overall, we are in a pretty good place and the players are giving everything they have and should be confident leading into our next match vs Harvard at home on Friday.
