Women’s Soccer Edged By Elon, 2-1

Greensboro, N.C. The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team got on the board in the first half, but Elon outlasted the Spartans taking a 2-1 win Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in non-conference play.

How it Happened:
The first half saw some great back and forth between the two teams. Elon came out swinging, outshooting the Spartans 9-4 in the first half. UNCG was the first to strike, as senior Maddy Gilhool struck the ball with her left foot in the 26th minute to put the Spartans up 1-0. After some passing around in the back line, freshman Ava Kiss received the ball and headed it towards the goal. She saw her opportunity and floated a ball over the Phoenix backline where Gilhool did not hesitate to volley the ball over the Elon goalkeeper to notch her fourth goal of the season. The goal did not go unanswered though. In the 40th minute, Elon's Abby Fusca cut the ball to her right foot and lofted the ball in from just outside the 18-yard box, to tie the score at one, by halftime.

UNCG spent most of the second half on Elon's defensive third, putting in a total of seven shots on goal to Elon's one. The Spartans controlled the ball, moving it from side to side and showing great composure. It was not until the 85th minute that Elon was able to get a chance on net. A free kick was given outside the Spartan's 18-yard box. After a jumble in the box, the ball fell perfectly to Ashlee Brehio who found the back of the net with ease. Elon walked away with a 2-1 win.
