GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf graduate student
Nicole Lu cracked the top-ten individuals as the Spartans hosted the 54-hole Grandover Invitational Monday morning and afternoon. The hosts posted a fifth-place finish through 36 holes at Grandover Resort & Conference Center on the East Course.
UNCG stands in a tie for fifth place with Towson at 46-over-par (622). The Spartans improved eight strokes from their first-round effort with a team score of 307 in the second round, moving up two spots on the leaderboard on the par 72, 6,155-yard course. UNCG stands six shots behind Marshall and conference foe Wofford for third place with each standing at 40-over-par (616).
Lu climbed the leaderboard into eighth place with a second round three-over-par (75) effort, gaining eight spots on the leaderboard. The graduate student carded five birdies during the second round including both par five holes on the back nine stretch. Starting the second round on the 15th hole, Lu finished two of the final five holes with birdies to crack the top ten. Lu led the Spartans with a six-over-par (78) in the morning session.
Grace Holcomb stands in a tie for 14th place after a second round three-over-par (75) score. The sophomore shot one-under-par on the front side, capitalizing on the par-five, 495-yard second hole and the par-three, 165-yard seventh. Holcomb moved up seven spots with her second-round effort after a seven-over-par (79) first 18-hole score. She stands just one stroke outside the top-ten leaders.
Ava Romfo stands one shot behind Holcomb in a tie for 17th place thanks to a four-over-par (76) second-round effort. The sophomore moved four spots up the leaderboard as she posted two birdies on the front nine, including one on the par-four, 350-yard ninth hole. That birdie was only one of four birdies on the hole all day, posting the toughest average score in the tournament through two rounds. Romfo withstood the tough back nine stretch, posting a par on seven of nine holes.
