LOUISVILLE, KY. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team tied 1-1 against its first top-25 team of the season in No. 15 Louisville Tuesday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium in non-conference play.
This was the Spartans' first ACC test of the season, visiting Clemson on Tuesday, October 11.
The Spartans are ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches South poll and receiving votes in the National poll. They are also No. 16 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll, and No. 20 in the College Soccer News poll.
The Cardinals are No. 29 in the College Soccer News poll and No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches South poll.
From Head Coach Chris Rich
"I am proud of our performance. Besides the first 15 minutes, I thought we were very good tonight. Louisville is a top team so of course, we had to deal with some difficult moments at times, but the guys rose to the occasion.
"The guys executed the game plan, which allowed us to have god sustained possessions. We are disappointed to not get the winner in the second half as I thought we deserved it, but we are happy with the performance overall."
How it Happened:
The first half was very tactical yet physical as the Spartans settled into its first power five stadium of the season. UNCG recorded its first corner kick at 10:42, resulting in its first shot, a strike by
J.C. Ngando that was blocked at the top of the 18-yard box. In the 13
th minute of play, a Spartans' pass was intercepted by the Cardinals and Macoumba Ba maneuvered around defenders to tuck the ball next to the front right post for a 1-0 lead. Bradley Sample assisted on the play at 12:36.
UNCG put in the equalizer during the 33
rd minute with
Steven Hernandez scoring his fourth goal of the season. The freshman received a pass from
Ismail El Harchi and maneuvered past the Cardinals striking the ball to the right of the diving keeper for a tally at 32:59. UNCG battled until the horn recording three of its five first-half corners in the final four minutes of the half.
The second half was just as strategic as the first with UNCG tallying four shots and Louisville registering six. The Cardinals put their first corner kick on the board in the 51
st minute, but the Spartans' defense held up clearing the ball. In the 78
th minute, freshman
Colton Sessoms tried his hand at an attack, dribbling the ball once and punching it right at the Cardinals' keeper for a save. Two of Louisville's five total corners were taken in the last minute of the game, testing UNCG's defense once more before the final horn.
By the Numbers:
- The Cardinals outshot the Spartans 9-8.
- UNCG had nine corner kicks, to Louisville's five.
- Louisville was called for 11 fouls, while UNCG was called for seven.
- The Spartans' junior goalkeeper Niclas Wild made one save.
- The Cardinals' Ryan Troutman recorded three saves.
- This was the second all-time meeting between the two teams, with UNCG leading 1-0-1.
Head Coach Rich on playing top 25 teams
"Playing top 25 games on the road is only going to make us better as we move forward. We're excited to get back to campus and start preparing for conference play."

- UNCG: 5-1-3, 0-0-0 SoCon
