College Soccer News Announces Men's Team of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Steven Hernandez of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team was first named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday. Hernandez was then recognized by the Southern Conference (SoCon) as the Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Hernandez had a huge hand in UNCG's 5-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Friday, September 2 at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The freshman scored three of the five goals, including his first-collegiate goal and hat trick.

He currently leads the team with his three goals. Hernandez is the first Spartan to score a hat trick since Theo Collomb's three goals against VMI on September 25, 2021 at home. He is the third Spartan under Head Coach Chris Rich to record a hat trick (Hernandez, Collomb, and Albert Pedra in a 3-1 win over ODU on November 2, 2019.

UNCG is 3-0 this season, which is the best start in program history since the 2013 season, when the Spartans began the slate 3-0. This is the first time under fourth-year Head Coach Rich that UNCG is starting the season undefeated. The team is currently fifth in the United Soccer Coaches South Region, 22nd in the College Soccer News Poll, and receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll.

From Hernandez
"It is an honor to have been able to start and then to contribute to the winning game. The Player of the Week was a surprise and a huge honor for me. Our wins have been a team effort and we are working together better and better with each game. I'm looking forward to our future wins."
