GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory against Longwood in the Spartans' home opener on Friday.
The Spartans took the first doubles win with junior
David Flisberg and freshman
John Gabelic in the number one slot, defeating Longwood's duo, 6-3. But the Lancers then took number two and three doubles in close sets to secure a 1-0 advantage.
"It felt great today," mentioned Gabelic. "It was so exciting to play our first home match of the season! I think I played great in both singles and doubles. It was nice, sunny weather, but the wind made it a bit more difficult. I had to play with more margins today. It still worked out well. I'm proud of the boys that we got the win, 5-2! I'm just pumped for all of the upcoming matches and we all going to work hard to get more wins!"
Freshman
Andrew Black tied the match at one with a 6-3, 6-0 win in number six singles. This was his first win of the spring season.
Classmate
Tymofiy Khrystyuk knocked out UNCG's second point of the day behind a 6-1, 6-4 victory at number three singles. Gabelic also posted a two-set victory with scores of 6-2, 6-2 in number two singles to put the Spartans up 3-1.
Flisberg played a tight first set against Longwood's Guillermo Cagigas but eased through the second set in number one singles, 7-5, 6-1, clinching the win for the Spartans.
Devon Moskowitz earned the Spartans' final singles point forcing a third set tiebreaker and winning 10-8.
