Women’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to Campbell

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team completed its second contest of a three-match weekend, dropping another close affair 4-3 to the Camels of Campbell University.

"We're beating ourselves on a couple of courts," said Head Coach Paul Thomson. "When your error to winner ratio is 3-1 or more, it's not going to give you much of a chance. We have to start getting some production from more than three or four spots in the lineup."

The doubles pairings switched around today with the duo of Juliana Craft and Luna Urso, playing beautifully on court two to seal a 6-2 win. Courts one and three were not so fortunate, falling both by a 6-3 margin.

"We went into doubles with a specific game plan on court two. They ran it perfectly," stated coach Thomson. "We dropped four deuce games on court one and lost a 3-1 lead on court three. That did us in."

Down 0-1 going into singles, Arina Babkova came to life rolling to a quick 6-2, 6-1 win. With the match tied 1-1, Olivia Gallagher continued to improve and play her game winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.

With the Spartans up 2-1, things began to turn as Alexandra Dodashev fell at number two singles 6-2, 7-5. Things were all even at 2-2 when Hanna Giddings dropped a three-set match 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

Momentum swung again for the Spartans, as Raegan Mitchell came out on top again winning her battle 7-5, 3-6, 6-0. The final court was Urso playing at number five singles. The match was decided here as she fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

"I cannot argue the effort and fight of these young ladies," mentions Thomson. "Our issue is errors and erratic play on a couple of courts. That's shifting pressure onto others who are having to carry more weight than they should be. We are moving in the right direction. The ability and desire is 100% intact. It's a little more discipline and trusting the right things and themselves. They are going to get there."

The Spartans complete their marathon weekend tomorrow at noon against the Blue Hose from Presbyterian College. The match will be played indoors at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
