GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team lost to the Paladins of Furman (16-25, 12-25, 23-25) in Greenville on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A kill from
America Anderson gave the Spartans the first point of the match (1-0). UNCG continued to hold the lead for the majority of set one until the Paladins produced a 10-2 run to take the lead (18-14) and hold it for the remainder of set one. Furman concluded the first game with a 6-0 run to secure it with a score of 25-16.
A solo block from Anderson put UNCG up first once again in set two (1-0). However, Furman's Grainne McGrath captured a kill that would send the home team into an 8-0 run to take the lead and maintain it for the remainder of the second game. Despite Furman maintaining the lead, with the score 14-6, the Spartans captured a 4-0 run to pull back within four (10-14). However, the Paladins put an end to the second set with a 10-1 run to earn it, 25-12.
The third set started off very close with four ties and two lead changes. With UNCG up 5-3 in the set, Furman responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead (7-5) and hold it for the remainder of the match. Back-to-back service aces from
Valeria Calderon put the Spartans back within three late in the set (14-17). The Spartans captured a couple more runs late in the set. With the score 16-22, the squad recorded a 6-1 run to pull within one of tying the game (22-23) and again with a kill from
Madeline Timmerman (23-24). A final kill from Furman's Mary Beth Headley gave Furman the third and final set, 25-23.

The Spartans will return home next weekend for UNCG's homecoming weekend. The squad will have a matchup to Mercer on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. and to Samford on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium. Friday's game will give UNCG students the chance to win Apple Air Pods or an Apple watch. Saturday's game will be a whiteout game, fans are encouraged to wear white. Saturday's game will also recognize alumni in attendance and UNCG volleyball players will be signing autographs after the game.
