GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team saw five different goal scorers in Sunday's 5-1 senior day victory in The Southern Conference (SoCon) regular-season finale at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
This is the most goals scored by the Spartans since a 5-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday, October 10, 2021 in Greensboro.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans quickly took control of the first half by holding possession in their attacking third. In the 25
th minute,
Parker Sikora sent a pass in from the midfield to find the feet of
Hannah Morton. Morton struck the ball from about 25 yards out to put the Spartans up, 1-0.
UNCG kept the intensity high heading into the second frame, doubling its score at 49:26 with the first shot of the half. At the 50
th minute,
Taylor Mentzer sat at the top of the box and settled the ball after a VMI failed clearance. Mentzer took one touch before striking it past the Keydet's goalkeeper, for a 2-0 advantage.
During a corner kick for the Keydets, there was a foul on UNCG inside the box creating a penalty kick for VMI. Riley Boucher sent the ball down the middle to the back of the net cutting the deficit for VMI, 2-1 at 60:56.
Coming off the bench for the Spartans,
Katie Koncal sent a through ball to
Ryen Ortiz. Ortiz took one touch before sending the ball into the back of the net for the Spartans to extend the lead, 3-1 at 63:43.
Twelve minutes later,
Dalani Stephens collected a cleared ball at the top of the 18-yard box, kicking it straight into the back right corner at 75:25, adding to the Spartans score, 4-1. Less than 10 minutes later,
Bailey Gourdine dribbled around the Cadets' backline before sending a long ball from just outside the 18-yard box into the corner of the net to conclude the offensive attack and secure a 5-1 win for the Spartans.
