Volleyball Concludes 2023 Season at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team concluded the 2023 season after dropping a four-set match (12-25, 24-26, 25-22, 17-25) to ETSU in the first round of The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bucs began the first set with a 7-1 run to never allow the Spartans to lead in game one. A kill from ETSU's Lundyn Coffman, a service ace from Brianna Cantrell and a final kill from Whitley Rammel gave ETSU set one, 25-12.

ETSU controlled the beginning of set two by starting things off with a 6-1 run. However, with UNCG down 5-9, the squad notched a 5-0 run that was mostly brought on with blocks from Sierra Herndon, Madeline Timmerman and America Anderson as well a service ace from Avery Sziksai, this gave the Spartans their first lead of the match (10-9). The Bucs responded with a 3-0 run to regain the lead (12-10), but the Spartans dropped a 6-0 run to get back on top and stay there until late in the set. With UNCG up 22-18, ETSU recorded a 4-0 run to tie game (22-22) and turn the remainder of the second set into a back-and-forth battle. With the game tied at 24, the Bucs were able to secure the second set, 26-24 after recording back-to-back points.

Although the third set saw three ties early on, the Spartans were able to maintain the lead throughout the entire third game. With the set tied at seven points apiece, the Spartans recorded a 2-0 run to take the lead (9-7) and not allow ETSU to come back within range again. A final block assist from Daija Jackson and Baran gave the Blue & Gold the third set, 25-22. As a team, UNCG produced 14 kills to the Bucs' eight in the third frame.

Although the fourth set tied on four occasions, the Bucs never allowed the Spartans to gain the lead in the game. A final kill from ETSU's Jenna Forster gave the Bucs the final set, 25-17 for the match.
