Men’s Soccer to Play Mercer in SoCon Quarterfinal

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team begins postseason play this Friday, November 3 as the fourth seed in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament. The Spartans are set to face the fifth-seeded Mercer Bears in Johnson City, Tennessee at the Summers-Taylor Stadium. Top-seeded ETSU will act as the host.

The Spartans come into Friday's match with a 2-9-5 overall record and 1-2-2 in the SoCon, while the Bears are 5-5-7 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play.

The Spartans and Bears played to a 1-1 draw during the regular season in Greensboro, N.C. on October 21st. Arnaud Tattevin scored for the Spartans, while Nick Wanzer tallied the goal for the Bears.

The Spartans and the Bears have met five times in SoCon Tournament play, where the series is tied 2-2-1. The two teams last met in the 2022 SoCon Championship match, where UNCG won 2-1 for the 2022 SoCon Tournament title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on November 12, 2022 in Greensboro, N.C.

SPARTAN QUICK HITTERS
  • Freshman Arnaud Tattevin was most recently named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week for scoring a hat trick against VMI in the Spartans' final regular season contest.
  • Tattevin now has six goals on the season for 12 points to lead the team.

  • Nabil Homssa is second on the team with eight points (3 G, 2 A), while Ethan Conley is third with six points (2 G, 2 A).

  • UNCG was voted to finish first in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll, while Emmanuel HaganEthan Conley, and Basile Marc earned Preseason All-Conference honors. All three were named to SoCon All-Conference teams.

  • Barzee Blama is leading the team with 15 points (7 G, 1 A).
  • Omar Hernandez and Carlos Santamaria each have scored three goals and chipped in three assists for nine total points for second on the team.
  • The Bears are nationally ranked 67th in save percentage (0.743), 56th in shutout percentage (0.353), 61st in team goals against average (1.12), and 82nd in goal differential (3).
  • Trevor McMullen is nationally ranked 20th save percentage (0.797), 37th in goals against average (0.851), 39th in shutouts (5), and 60th in total saves (51).
  • McMullen has started and played in 16 games for the Bears in net, giving up 13 goals for 0.85 goals against average.
  • The Bears' lone vvSoCon win was a 5-1 victory over VMI.
The winner of this game will move on to the SoCon Semifinal game to face the top-seeded ETSU on Sunday, November 5 at 3:00 p.m.
