Volleyball Set to Close Regular Season at Home

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will conclude its regular season schedule at home this weekend. The Spartans will take on Furman on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. and Western Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium. Daija Jackson and Valeria Calderon will be honored in a senior day ceremony prior to Saturday's match for their hard work and dedication to UNCG volleyball.

Quick Hitters for the Spartans
  • UNCG heads into its final weekend of regular season play with a 1-24 overall record and 0-14 in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
  • Head Coach Felicia Turner gained her first win as a head coach on Friday, Sept. 8 with a 3-0 sweep over USC Upstate at the Black & Gold Classic, hosted by App State
  • The Spartans most recently dropped straight set matches at Wofford and The Citadel last weekend.
  • Mallory Meers led the way as the setter for the Spartans last week after notching 28 assists over six sets for a 4.67 assists per set average. She added six service aces and nine digs on the week.
  • Meers leads overall with 374 assists on the season. Izora Gragg follows closely behind with 356 assists.
  • Aylin Baran led the way offensively once again for the Spartans last week after registering 15 kills over six sets on the week. The freshman notched a 2.50 kills per set, 1.50 digs per set and 2.67 points per set averages. She stands at seventh place in the SoCon with a 3.07 kills per set average and leads the Spartans with 261 kills on the season.
  • Avery Sziksai led the way as the libero for UNCG last week by collecting 18 digs over six sets for a 3.60 digs per set average. Sziksai leads the squad with 31 service aces on the 2023 stanza.
  • Daija Jackson and Madeline Timmerman lead UNCG as middle blockers this season with 48.0 and 44.0 total blocks, respectively.
Scouting Furman
The Paladins head into their final weekend of regular season play fifth in the conference with a 16-9 overall record and 7-7 in the SoCon. Furman went 0-1 at home last weekend after dropping a five-set matchup to Mercer and a straight set match to Chattanooga.
 
Mary Beth Headley leads the squad in two statistical categories this season with 237 kills and 27 service aces. Ella Abraham stands out as the setter with 568 assists. Grainne McGrath and Izzy Castelloe lead the Paladins as blockers with 84.0 and 83.0 total blocks, respectively. Kennedy Seekford stands out as the passer for the team with 437 digs on the 2023 campaign.
 
Furman defeated UNCG over straight sets in Greensville, S.C., earlier this season. The Paladins lead in the overall series against the Spartans at 40-16.

Scouting Western Carolina
The Catamounts are 9-16 overall and 6-8 in the SoCon heading into the weekend. Western Carolina went 1-1 at home last weekend after defeating Chattanooga in straight sets, but dropping a five-set thriller to Samford on senior day.
 
Eden Punch and Ali Morris stand out on the defensive end for WCU this season with 84.0 total blocks and 325 digs, respectively. Bailey Hartsough with 287 kills and Sarah Janourova with 637 assists lead the team on the offensive end.

The Catamounts and Spartans met earlier this season in Cullowhee, N.C. Western Carolina came away with the recent matchup in straight sets. UNCG trails in the overall series against WCU at 26-34.

The Spartans will compete in the first round match of the SoCon Tournament on either Monday, Nov. 13 or Tuesday Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., hosted by the No. 8 seed, which will be determined concluding Saturday's conference matches. A win in the first round would move UNCG up to the Quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 17 in Spartanburg, S.C.
