Softball Defeats Delaware, Falls to UConn

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team opened its second home tournament of the season with a 4-3 victory over Delaware and then falling to UConn, 3-1.
 
Game 1: UNCG 4 – Delaware 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
UNCG got on board first with two runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third and one out, Jorde Chartrand drove home Delaney Cumbie from third, 1-0. Blayke Batten brought home the Spartans' second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Maycin Brown from third, 2-0.
 
Delaware had one hit in three innings, as Rhyann Jones retired nine-straight through three innings including three strikeouts.
 
The Blue Hens cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the top of the fourth on a fielding error.
 
UNCG didn't quit and in the bottom of the fourth with a runner on first, Jaden Cheek added to the Spartans' home run count with her first hit donning the blue & Gold over the center field wall for a 4-1 advantage.
 
Delaware's Garber responded in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast to right center to cut the deficit once again, 4-3. UNCG threatened in the bottom of the fifth but the Blue Hens retired the side. Chartrand came in relief for UNCG and retired the side in each of the sixth and seventh to hold on for the win.
 
NOTES
  • Cheek's homer was UNCG's 12th of the season, her first as a Spartan and first career.
  • Cheek went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI.
  • Chartrand went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Anna White went 1-for-2.
  • Jones and Chartrand combined for six strikeouts.

Game 2: UConn 3 – UNCG 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Huskies opened the game with a three-run home run from Jana Sanden in the top of the first.
 
UNCG's Maddie Spell retired eight straight batters from the second inning to the fourth, including two of her five strikeouts.  
 
In the bottom of the third inning on a 1-1 count, Delaney Cumbie launched her fourth home run of the season and 39th blast of her career.
 
NOTES
  • Cumbie went 1-for-2 with one run scored, an RBI, and a walk.
  • Jaden Cheek went 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Spell struck out five in the 7.0 innings tossed.
