Baseball Dominates Queens, 14-9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dominated Queens in a Friday match-up in Charlotte this afternoon, 14-9.

Price King saw the mound for the first time this season pitching 4.2 innings allowing no runs, giving up just three hits, and picking up his first win of the season.

As a team, UNCG totaled 21 hits for its eighth game this season with double digit hits. This was the first game since the Spartans' 16-5 win against Mercer in the SoCon Tournament on May 28, 2022 with 20 or more hits.

G.C. Jarman went 4-for-5, his best plate appearance for the season. Seven other Spartans also had multi-hit games, including Kennedy Jones (3-for-5), Zack Budzik (3-for-6), Mitchell Smith (3-for-5), Dallas Callahan (2-for-6), Caleb Cozart (2-for-6), Jeremy Wolf (2-for-2), and Bradley Bott (2-for-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a battle of the pitchers to start the game until Queens had a four-run inning in the bottom of the third, 4-0.

UNCG countered in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs off five hits and one error, taking the lead from Queens, 5-4.

Queens had a solo home run from Sam Hunter and Riley Cheek scored from third after Dillon Lewis hit a double in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 6-5.

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fifth from Jarman's RBI single to left center, 6-6, before taking back the lead in the top of the sixth on Smith's RBI single to right field, 7-6.

In the top of the eighth, Budzik led off the frame with a single and scored on Smith's double to left center, 8-6. Dosi Jonas then extended the advantage to three, 9-6, with his sacrifice fly to right field.

The Spartans had another five-run inning giving them a 14-6 cushion from six hits in the top of the ninth.

Queens tried to fight back in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the deficit to five with a solo home run from Cheek and a two runs on a single to right field by Will Budnick. UNCG got out of the inning with a double play.
