ETSU Claims Victory Over Women’s Tennis, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team was unable to get past Southern Conference (SoCon) foe ETSU on Saturday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.

The Bucs were shorthanded in doubles and won the top flight with a 6-3 victory. UNCG's Arina Babkova and Alexandra Dodashev took the win on court two, 6-2, taking an early 1-0 lead in the match.

ETSU then swept all six singles courts. Five of the six courts went to two sets, while court two singles went into a tiebreaker. The Bucs' Mariya Shumeika lost the first set to the Spartans' Hanna Giddings, 7-6, but came up on top 6-2 to tie the match in the second set. Shumeika cruised in the tiebreaker to win 10-1 and clinch the singles sweep.

The Spartans (3-11, 0-2 SoCon) return home for two matches next week. They first host SoCon foe Wofford on Friday, March 17 with a start time of 1 p.m. East Carolina then travels to Greensboro for a non-conference match on Sunday, March 19 with a start time of noon.
