HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.---The UNC Greensboro's (UNCG)
Ava Romfo earned a spot on the top-15 leaderboard as the Spartans stood eighth through 18 holes of the 54-hole Low Country Intercollegiate at Moss Creek Golf Club.
Romfo carded two birdies on her back nine scorecard on her way to a seven-over-par (79). The sophomore posted birdies in a two-out-of-three hole stretch with her first birdie on the par five, 468-yard 11th hole. Her second birdie came on the par four, 370-yard 13th. Romfo cracked the top-25 leaderboard by earning a share for 13th place. The sophomore stands one shot away from a spot in the top-ten and two shots from a top-five standing.
Julia Baeumken,
Victoria Cook, and
Grace Holcomb each posted nine-over-par (81) in first round efforts. Baeumken posted UNCG's second birdie on the 11th hole while Cook carded two birdies. The junior posted a birdie on the par five, 495-yard 14th hole and the par four, 268-yard 16th. The effort helped Cook post a two-over-par (38) back nine score.
The Spartans posted a 34-over-par (322) team score through the first round. UNCG stands eighth out of 19 teams and holds the advantage over Southern Conference foes The Citadel, Samford, and Wofford. The Spartans are one shot from USC Upstate in seventh place, four shots away from Jacksonville in sixth place, and five shots from Seton Hall and Quinnipiac standing in a tie for fourth place.
INSIDE THE SCORECARD
· UNCG's seven-over-par effort on par five holes was the third-best effort in the field.
· Cook and Holcomb shot even par on par fives which tied for the second-best individual effort.
· Baeumken stood one shot behind at one-over-par on par fives.
· Romfo's three-over-par on par-four holes stood in a tie for eighth.
· Cook and Romfo's two birdies tied for fifth in the field.
