GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team evened the series against Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina with a 5-4 walk-off win in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 12
th,
Mitchell Smith was hit by a pitch for a walk-off win.
How it Happened
GC Jarman was able to cross home plate while the first and second basemen were distracted by
Rowan Watt stealing second base, giving UNCG a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Western Carolina fought back with a run each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings for a 3-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, UNCG cut the deficit to one, 3-2, as
Dosi Jonas singled to right field allowing Smith to score from second.
UNCG tied the game at three in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI double to right center from
Kennedy Jones, scoring Watt from first.
The teams forced extra innings as neither team scored in the ninth. The Catamounts' Jack Spyke scored off Zach Ketterman's RBI single to right field for a 4-3 advantage. The Spartans then countered in the bottom of the 10
th with Smith hitting his third home run of the season with two outs, to tie the game at four.
The Catamounts stranded two on base in the top of the 12th, as UNCG walked off with the win in the bottom of the frame with one out and the bases loaded 5-4.
