Womens Soccer Welcomes Army for Season and Home Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team kicks things off during UNCG's Rockin Welcome Week with a home opener against Army on Thursday, with a start time of 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
 
Fifth-year Abby Buchholz, senior Parker Sikora, and junior Mel Herrera will lead the team as captains this year.

Scouting Army
 
The Black Knights were picked second in the Patriot League preseason poll. Senior defender Lindsey Smith was picked for the Patriot League Preseason All-League team. Army is coming off a 9-4-7 overall season and 6-1-2 conference record, falling to Bucknell University in the Patriot League Championship, 3-1 in penalty kicks. The Black Knights have 23 returning players, including star goalkeeper Kaelan Bradley who was in the top 50 nationally in saves.
 
Quick Hitters for the Spartans 
  • UNCG looks to come back stronger after a late-season run in 2022 falling to Samford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship game, 6-5 in penalty kicks.
  • The Spartans were voted second in the SoCon coaches' preseason poll.
  • Fifth-year Gabi Santora, Sikora, and sophomore Emma Malone were named to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference team.
  • The Spartans added eight freshmen to the 2023 roster.
  • UNCG finished the 2022 season 91st in RPI and was one of two SoCon teams in the top 100. 
  • Santora finished the season by leading the team in assists (6).
  • Buchholz and Malone led the squad on the defensive end this season. The goalkeeping duo recorded 84 total saves on the season. Buchholz had 56 and Malone tallied 28.
  • UNCG's eight shutouts last season was the most since 2018 when the Spartans also had eight.
  • The Spartans' 10 wins last season was the most wins since 2019, when they went 10-8-2.
