No. 10 Men’s Soccer Opens the 2023 Slate Hosting California

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The No. 10 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team opens the 2023 season with Pac-12 opponent California Golden Bears at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

The Spartans received a No. 10 preseason ranking from the United Soccer Coaches. They also sit seventh on the College Soccer News Preseason national poll and 10th on the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Poll.  

This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and the Golden Bears.

SPARTAN QUICK HITTERS
  • UNCG won The 2022 Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season and Tournament Championships, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Spartans reached the 2022 NCAA Quarterfinals after earning a first-round bye, and defeating Ohio State and Stanford.
  • With last season's 13-2-6 record, this was the second-straight year with 10 or more wins, under the direction of fifth-year Head Coach Chris Rich.
  • UNCG was voted to finish first in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll, while Emmanuel Hagan, Ethan Conley, and Basile Marc earned Preseason All-Conference honors. All three were named to SoCon All-Conference teams.
  • Hagan, Conley, and Marc were named captains this season.
  • The Spartans feature 15 returners, 10 freshmen, and three transfers.
SCOUTING CAL
  • Cal was chosen to finish fifth in the 2023 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Last season, Cal finished with a 3-8-6 record and a 1-6-3 mark in the Pac-12.
  • Nonso Adimabua and Wyatt Meyer return as they earned All-Pac-12 Team honors last season.
  • Meyer was named to the 2023 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team.
  • The Golden Bears roster features 14 newcomers, as well as 11 freshmen and three transfers
UNCG hits the road to battle No. 14 Maryland on the B1G Network on Sunday, August 27. The Spartans and the Terps will face off at 7:00 p.m. in College Park, Maryland at Ludwig Field.
