GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will travel to Statesboro, Ga., this weekend for the Bash in the Boro Tournament hosted by Georgia Southern. First, the Spartans will face East Carolina on Friday, August 25 at noon. The team will return to Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday, August 26 to take on East Carolina at noon and Georgia Southern at 5 p.m.

Quick Hitters for the Spartans
- The squad competed in one preseason exhibition match at home against UNC Pembroke last weekend.
- The 2023 season marks the inaugural start for the UNCG volleyball coaching staff under the helm of Head Coach Felicia Turner and assistant coaches Trent Dunahoo and Ashley Gasaway.
- The Spartans return nine from the 2022 roster and have gained three freshmen and two transfers.
- Last season, the Blue & Gold were led offensively by Taylor Robertson, who led the team with 284 kills and 27 service aces.
- Returner, Mya Wood followed closely behind with 218 kills on the 2022 season. Wood was also a key leader in service aces with 24 and notched 222 digs last year.
- Along with Wood, another key returner for the Spartans is Daija Jackson who came in second in blocks for the team with 62.0.
- The team finished last season with a 10-20 overall record and 4-12 in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
Scouting East CarolinaÂ
UNCG leads in the overall series against East Carolina at 18-3. The Pirates and Spartans last faced each other in 2013 at the Deacon Invitational at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Spartans claimed the straight set victory over the Pirates.

East Carolina finished the 2022 season 12-20 overall and 7-13 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The Pirates welcomed nine newcomers to the 2023 roster. The team was picked to finish second in the AAC according to the coaches preseason poll.

Scouting Georgia SouthernÂ
The Spartans and Eagles have met 30 times dating back to 1996 with Georgia Southern holding the overall series by two at 16-14. The two teams last met at UNCG's home tournament, Tussle in the Triad last season. The Eagles won the match 3-0. The last time the Spartans defeated the Eagles was in 2011 in Greensboro, N.C. over a five-set victory.

Georgia Southern was picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt preseason coaches poll. The team earned a 16-12 overall record and made it to the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament last season. The Eagles claimed a five-set win over SoCon foe, Furman for a preseason matchup in Statesboro, Ga.

Following this weekend's tournament in Statesboro, the Spartans will continue its non-conference slate in Huntington, W. Va., at the Marshall Invitational. UNCG will face Coppin State at noon and Marshall at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 1 and Akron on Saturday, September 2 at 11 a.m.
