GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team is set to host the Spartan Tri-Match this weekend in Fleming Gymnasium for its 2023 home opener. The Spartans will welcome in UNC Asheville and Charlotte for the tournament. UNCG will take on Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs and Niners will face each other for a neutral site match at noon on Saturday, Sept. 16. The tournament will be concluded with UNCG facing UNC Asheville on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Quick Hitters for the Spartans
- Head Coach Felicia Turner claimed her first win as a head coach last weekend with the team's 3-0 win over USC Upstate. It was the Spartans' first win of the season.
- Mallory Meers recorded two double-doubles last weekend with 28 assists and 14 digs in the team's first win of the season against USC Upstate on Friday and with 22 assists and 10 digs on Saturday against App State. This was her first double-double as a Spartan and 11th and 12th of her career. Meers collected 28 digs over nine sets played last weekend.
- Meers also led the Spartans as the setter this past weekend with 53 assists over the nine sets played. She had her best game of the week in the team's first win over USC Upstate with 28 assists. She has 166 assists on the season.
- Madeline Timmerman led the Spartans on the offensive end overall last week with 17 kills over 34 attempts and only five errors. Timmerman also recorded four service aces in Friday's win over USC Upstate. She notched 22.5 points over the weekend to earn her a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Black & Gold Classic.
- Aylin Baran leads the Spartans overall with 62 kills this season and averages 2.48 kills per set.
- Mya Wood has recorded 88 digs and Daija Jackson stands out with 10.0 blocks to lead the squad on the defensive end.
- This weekend's home opener will conclude the 2023 non-conference schedule for the Spartans.
Scouting Charlotte  Â
The Niners come into the weekend 5-5 overall. Charlotte began its 2023 season at home with the Charlotte Invitational. The team went 3-0 in the tournament, claiming wins over Charleston Southern, Elon and Coastal Carolina. Charlotte has won two of its last seven road matches. Most recently, the squad took a straight set loss to NC State for a weeknight matchup on Tuesday.Â
Lara Kretschmer leads the Niners in three statistical categories on the season with 80 kills, 10 service aces and 48.0 blocks. Sophie Whalen stands out as the libero with 151 digs and Annika Wetterstrom leads as the setter with 213 assists this season.
Charlotte leads in the all-time series against UNCG at 12-9. The last time the two teams met was in Fleming Gymnasium in 2017. The Niners took the four-set win over the Spartans with UNCG claiming set one, but Charlotte earning sets two, three and four.
Scouting UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs make their way to Greensboro at 5-6 overall. UNC Asheville began its season by going 3-1 during its home tournament. The squad also competed against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foes, Furman and Western Carolina, dropping two matches to Furman (0-3) and one to Western Carolina (0-3). UNC Asheville most recently took a trip to Statesboro, Ga., for a single game against Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs took a straight set loss to the Eagles.
Matilde Teixeira leads the Bulldogs with 110 kills, while Ona Elkins stands out as the setter with 132 assists on the year. Michelle Thao with 93 digs and Baylor Herlehy with 46.0 blocks, lead the squad on the defensive end.
UNCG leads overall against UNC Asheville at 12-6. The two teams most recently met last season when the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs in straight set fashion in Fleming Gym.Â

Concluding this weekend's home opener, UNCG will begin its SoCon schedule with a trip south next weekend. The Spartans will face Samford on Friday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. CST, followed by a matchup at Mercer on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
