Men’s Soccer to Contend High Point on Saturday Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team will make a trip across city limits to battle Triad foe High Point on Saturday, September 16 with a start time of 7:00 p.m. at Vert Stadium.

The Spartans enter the contest 1-3-2 overall, while the Panthers are 1-1-2 this season. The two teams faced off last year in Greensboro when UNCG won 5-1 on September 6, 2022. The last time the Spartans traveled to High Point was on October 5, 2019 when the Panthers won 1-0.

SPARTAN QUICK HITTERS

  • UNCG opened the season at home and played to a 1-1 draw to the California Golden Bears, in a game that was played over two days and five hours and 25 minutes due to inclement weather.
  • The Spartans faced back-to-back ranked opponents including, then-ranked No. 14 Maryland and No. 13 Louisville, falling 2-0 to both teams.
  • In a 1-1 draw against Campbell, Homssa scored his first-collegiate goal, while Colton Sessoms tallied his first assist of the season and third helper of his career.
  • Homssa leads the team with four points (1 G, 2 A), while Colton Sessoms is second with three points (1 G, 1 A).
  • Ethan Conley registered his second-career goal as the equalizer, while Sessoms scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Charlotte that was complete in the 81st minute due to inclement weather.
  • The Spartans most recently fell to in-state non-conference foe Davidson, 1-0, in Greensboro on Wednesday.
  • UNCG was voted to finish first in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll, while Emmanuel Hagan, Ethan Conley, and Basile Marc earned Preseason All-Conference honors. All three were named to SoCon All-Conference teams.
  • Hagan, Conley, and Marc were named captains this season.
  • The Spartans feature 15 returners, 10 freshmen, and three transfers.

SCOUTING HIGH POINT

  • Last season the Panthers finished 11-5-5 overall and 5-0-3 in the Big South, winning the 2022 Big South Tournament Championship and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
  • High Point defeated North Carolina in the opening round, 2-0, but then fell to Stanford 6-2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Panthers were voted as the 2023 Big South Preseason favorites, earning seven first-place votes.
  • High Point had five Panthers named to the 2023 Big South Preseason All-Conference team, including Noah Holmes who was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Finn McRobb who was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Jefferson Amaya, Aidan Abril, and Karson Kendall also represented High Point on the 2023 Preseason All-Conference team.
  • Most recently, High Point played to a 2-2 draw against Elon.
  • McRobb earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week after scoring his first goal of the season in the Panthers' 2-1 win over the University of Evansville.

The Spartans continue their non-conference slate with a road trip to Conway, South Carolina to face Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, September 19 with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
