VAIL, Colo. – Sophomore
Alexandra Phelps led the way tying for fifth, as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team opened round one of the GolfWeek Red Sky Classic on Monday in Colorado.
Phelps led the Spartans, scoring two under par (70). Following an eagle on the 18th hole and the turn, Phelps continued to impress with back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes.
Sophomore
Julia Baeumken carded eight straight pars on the back nine. Baeumken added three birdies on the front nine to post a four-over-par (76) score and is tied for 42
nd.
Elle Burnette and Ava Romfo each posted seven-over-par (79) performances in their first-round efforts. Romfo posted UNCG's second birdie of the day on the 15th hole while Burnette carded one birdie in round one. Freshman Burnette posted a birdie on the par five, 552-yard second hole. The effort helped Burnette post a three-over-par (39) front-nine score.
Victoria Cook who competed as an individual, carded an eagle on the par four, 372-yard 14th hole. Cook later posted three birdies, with the first one being on the par three, 136-yard 17
th hole.
Grace Holcomb rounds out UNCG with a score of nine over par (81), tied for 78
th.
The Spartans posted a 16-over-par (304) team score through the first round. UNCG stands 14th out of 16 teams and is two strokes behind ETSU, six strokes behind Wofford, and seven behind Mercer with its The Southern Conference foes.
