GREENSBORO, N.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team earned a 67-58 victory over Wofford on Thursday night to open up The Southern Conference (SoCon) play 1-0 in Fleming Gym.
Â
With tonight's two blocks
Khalis Cain now holds the UNCG women's basketball program record for most blocks in a career with 133.
Â
Jayde Gamble led UNCG with 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals on Thursday night. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
A pass from
Ayanna Khalfani to give Gamble an open three-pointer put the Spartans on top first to begin Thursday's match. The Terriers responded with a quick 8-0 run to take an 8-3 lead. However, five consecutive points from Gamble, followed by a pull-up jumper from
Isys Grady gave UNCG control again (11-8) to hold the lead for the remainder of the first frame. A three-pointer and fast break layup from
Nasia Powell gave UNCG a 17-12 lead to close out the first quarter.
Â
The Spartans continued to hold the lead for the remainder of the first half despite the Terriers outscoring the Spartans 8-7 in the second frame.
Nia Howard led UNCG with four points in the second frame for the Spartans to head into the half on top, 24-20. Â
Â
A jumper from Grady began the third quarter for the Spartans. UNCG continued to hold the lead for the majority of the period. However, with the Spartans on top, 32-30, the Terriers recorded a 4-0 run to take their first lead since early on in the contest. The remainder of the third quarter went back-and-forth. With the game tied at 43, two free throws from Gamble gave UNCG a 45-42 lead heading into the final quarter of action.
Â
Two points apiece for both teams began the fourth quarter. Five points from Rachel Rose gave Wofford a 48-47 lead, but that would be the final lead for the Terriers in the contest. UNCG responded with a 16-2 run to take a 63-50 lead over Wofford. With the Spartans up 65-52, Wofford drained two consecutive three-pointers to pull back within seven (58-65). However, it wouldn't be enough to keep the Spartans from claiming the 67-58 win over the Terriers. After having no fouls in the first half, reigning SoCon Player of the Year and five-time SoCon Player of the Week, Rose fouled out of the game in the final minutes of action.
