Men’s Soccer Hits Road for SoCon Bout Against Wofford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team heads to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to take on the Wofford Terriers in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Snyder Field.

UNCG is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak and has won its last three games by a combined score of 8-1.

THE SPARTANS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Spartans thumped the Elon Phoenix, 4-1, at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.
  • UNCG scored three of its four goals before there were 10 minutes elapsed in the match.
  • The Spartans were led by freshman Issah Haruna and sophomore Arnaud Tattevin, who each had a brace with one assist for five points.
  • Sophomore forward Enzo Dovlo assisted on the Spartans' fourth goal during the 34th minute.
  • Defender Emmanuel Hagan and goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde played the entire 90 minutes for UNCG.
  • The Spartans led in corners, 8-6, shots, 15-7, and shots on goal, 9-2.

UNCG QUICK KICKS
  • UNCG is 7-1-4 overall and 1-0-1 in the SoCon, which includes a 6-0-1 mark at home and 1-1-3 record on the road.
  • The Spartans received votes in this week's edition of the United Soccer Coaches Poll. It marks UNCG's third time in the poll this season after breaking into the first poll of the regular season on Aug. 27 at No. 18 before receiving votes the following week (Sept. 3).
  • UNCG jumped up four spots to No. 19 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer Men's College Soccer National Rankings, marking the fourth consecutive week in the poll.
  • Among national statistical categories, the Spartans stand within the top 20 of the country as a team when it comes to save percentage (5th/.822), team goals against average (9th/.667), shutout percentage (13th/.500) and won-loss-tied percentage (16th/.750).
  • Throughout the SoCon, UNCG is ranked first in corner kicks per game (5.36), goal differential (13), save percentage, team goals against average and won-loss-tied percentage.
  • Baerwalde was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after he made three saves for a clean sheet in his Spartan debut last Saturday against Furman. It marked the fourth shutout of his collegiate career.
  • Okawa is tied for the conference lead with five goals and second with 13 points. He scored three goals in two games last week and was named to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week as a result.
  • Baerwalde and Seth Wilson have combined for six shutouts this season. Wilson ranks 20th in the country with five on the campaign. He was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27 and Sept. 17.
  • Dovlo is second on the team with four goals and 10 points.
  • Tattevin is now third on the team with eight points (3g, 2a). He led UNCG a season ago with seven goals for 14 points.
  • Haruna was ranked No. 96 in TopDrawerSoccer's Midseason Freshman Top 100. He is fourth on the squad with seven points (3g, 1a).
  • UNCG faced three top-25 programs in its first seven games.
  • The Spartans faced No. 16 Georgetown on the road and fell 1-0 on Aug. 30 before drawing, 0-0, at home against No. 19 Charlotte on Sept. 13 and tying No. 5 West Virginia on the road, 2-2, on Sept. 17.
  • UNCG was selected to finish third in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Poll following voting completed by the league's six head coaches. UNCG received one first-place vote. Senior Basile Marc and Tattevin were named to the 11-member All-SoCon preseason team on Aug. 13.
  • Head Coach Chris Rich is in his sixth season at the helm of UNCG's men's soccer program. He has guided the Spartans to a 53-29-19 (19-5-6 SoCon) record since 2019 and totaled nine or more victories in four of his first five seasons.
  • Under Coach Rich, UNCG has won three SoCon Regular Season titles, won the SoCon Tournament twice and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances since 2019.
  • The Spartans' roster has 15 returners and 13 newcomers for a total of 28 players on the roster.
  • UNCG's recruiting class was ranked No. 44 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer on Aug. 21 and includes seven transfers and seven incoming freshmen.
  • The new class positionally features a total of four defenders, three goalkeepers, two forwards, two midfielders, one midfielder/forward and one midfielder/defender.
  • In total, the Spartans roster consists of nine forwards, seven midfielders, seven defenders, three goalkeepers and a pair of midfielder/defenders.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
  • Wofford owns a 4-4-2 overall record with an 0-1-0 mark so far in conference play.
  • The Terriers are coming off a 1-0 loss to Longwood at home on Tuesday. In their previous match, which was their first SoCon match, the Terriers fell 2-0 while hosting ETSU.
  • Sophomore Mettee Declan leads Wofford with two goals and an assist for five points.
  • Junior Jakob Andersson is second on the team with three points thanks to having a team-leading three assists.
  • Freshman Leo Ledin has started all 10 matches in goal for the Terriers and has yet to miss any action. He owns a 0.90 goals against average, a .710 save percentage and is 30th in the country with four shutouts.
  • Wofford was selected to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and tied the first-place team, Mercer, with a pair of first-place votes.
  • Andersson and fifth-year Bryce Peacock were named to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.

THE SERIES HISTORY
The Spartans own a 28-7-2 record over the Terriers in the all-time series, which dates back to the first meeting on Oct. 15, 1997.

UNCG and Wofford played to a 1-1 draw in Greensboro last season. Prior to that, the Spartans prevailed in five consecutive games over the Terriers since the 2018 campaign.

The Spartans return home to host UNC Wilmington in their final non-conference contest on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
