GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team won both its games on day one of the Spiro Classic behind a 5-3 win over Sacred Heart and a 7-2 victory against Drexel at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Game 1: UNCG 5 – Sacred Heart 3
After a scoreless first inning, Sacred Heart got on board first with a three-run home run from Morgan Teodosio in the top of the second.
UNCG got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together four hits, one walk, and one error for three runs to tie the game. The Spartans first run came on
Jessie Shipley's double to left field with no outs, scoring
Brooklynn Maxwell. With one out,
Jorde Chartrand hit an RBI single to center field driving home Shipley from third.
Maycin Brown's RBI single then followed Chartrand's to score
Grace Loftin.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Meredith Harwood crushed a 1-1 count over the left center wall with Shipley on second giving the Spartans their first lead of the game, 5-3.
Drexel reached base once in the top of the sixth and threatened with two runners in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans held on for the 5-3 victory.
Shipley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and two doubles. Chartrand tossed 6.1 innings and struck out four batters, earning her first win in the circle this season.

Game 2: UNCG 7 – Drexel 2
The Spartans took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second as
Betsy Eatmon hit her first-collegiate home run to center field and Maxwell singled to left center scoring
Maddie Spell.
Drexel cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the top of the third on Mia Garza's RBI single, but the Spartans did not let that last long scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth, 4-1.
Samantha Beck took the second pitch of her at bat and sent it over the left field wall for her first collegiate home run, while Maxwell followed with her third homer of the season, a solo shot to center field. The Spartans added a three-run cushion to their lead in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-1 advantage.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Dragons loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out and Garza singled to center field to put one more tally on the board before UNCG retired the side and secured the win, 7-2.
Spell earned her third win this season in the circle and struck out four batters, while Maxwell went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Shipley went 2-for-4 and Beck hit 2-for-2 at the dish.
