Softball Falls to Ohio, Defeats Drexel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to Ohio in its first game on Saturday, 6-2, before taking a 7-3 victory over Drexel at the UNCG Softball Stadium during day two of the Spiro Classic.

Game 1: Ohio 6 – UNCG 2
The Bobcats quickly took an advantage at the plate in the top of the first scoring three runs off Yasmine Loga's two-run home run and a solo homer from Izzie Wilson, 3-0.

Ohio held the Spartans scoreless for two innings before UNCG scored with two outs. Jessie Shipley tallied her second triple of the season in the bottom of the third and Grace Loftin followed with a RBI single bringing Shipley home, 3-1.

UNCG added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Maycin Brown doubled to left center with two outs scoring Jaden Cheek from first base, 3-2.

Ohio doubled its score in the top of the fifth on one hit, where Annalia Paol blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall, 6-2. Neither team was able to put another tally on the board, as the Bobcats secured the win.

Brown and Loftin both went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Shipley went 2-for-4. In Reese Byrd's third appearance of the season in the circle, she tossed 2.0 innings, struck out two batters, and did not allow a run.

Game 2: UNCG 7 – Drexel 3
Byrd retired the first three batters for Drexel setting the tone for the Spartans in the circle. UNCG came up to bat and Shipley crushed her second home run of the season over the right center wall to take a 1-0 lead. Loftin walked following Shipley's homer and Meredith Harwood slammed a two-run blast down the left field line extending the Spartans' lead, 3-0.

The Dragons cut the deficit to two, 3-1, after Lindsey Hunt doubled scoring Kalea Calugay in the top of the third. UNCG did not let up and doubled its score, 6-1, with three runs on one hit and two errors. Brown registered her second double of the season that cleared the bases in the bottom of the frame.

Drexel was able to add a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, as UNCG added one of its own in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and two runners on, Chatrand singled to center field scoring Shipley.

The Spartans were able to keep the Dragons scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 7-3 win.

Shipley went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Chartrand went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Salem Ward came in relief, tossing 4.1 innings and struck out four batters for her first win of the season.
