Men’s Basketball Hosts Samford Thursday on ESPNU, Welcomes Chattanooga on Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team stays home this week, bringing in The Southern Conference (SoCon) leading Samford Bulldogs on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. This game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
 
The Spartans will follow that game with the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday, February 10 on ESPN+ at 4:00 p.m.
 
UNCG is 17-6 overall this season and 8-2 in SoCon play. Samford is 20-3 overall and 9-1 in SoCon play, while Chattanooga is 15-8 overall and 7-3 in SoCon action. These three teams are currently the top three in the conference.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG fought until the very end in an 89-87 victory over Furman on Sunday at Timmons Arena.
  • Keyshaun Langley had his first 30-point game of his career, scoring 21 points in the first half. He is the second Spartan to reach the 30-point mark this season and third time that someone from UNCG has reached this milestone.
  • Mikeal Brown-Jones contributed 19 points, while Jalen Breath had 13 points.
  • The Spartans shot an impressive 59.1-percent from long range (13-for-22), making it the best of the season.
  • They also shot 94.7-percent (18-for-19) from the free throw line, for the best percentage this season.
  • Brown-Jones shot 8-for-8 at the charity stripe.
  • Breath added five rebounds to his stat line, as well as a career-best three blocks.
  • Kobe and Donovan Atwell each chipped in five assists. Atwell's five was a career high.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • Currently, the Spartans are ranked nationally in the top 50 in six categories: eighth in three-point percentage (39.7), 16th in three pointers per game (10.0), 22nd in field goal percentage defense (39.8), 34th in effective field goal percentage (0.549), 37th in assist/turnover (1.48), 41st in winning percentage (73.9).
  • UNCG is outscoring its opponents 77.7-70.0 and is averaging 6.7 steals per game compared to its foes who are averaging 5.4 per game.
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in assist/turnover ratio, field goal percentage defense, and three-point percentage defense.  
  • Kobe is nationally ranked 14th in assist/turnover ratio (3.29), 18th in steals (51), 19th in assists (135), 23rd in assists per game (5.9), 25th in steals per game (2.22). He is leading the SoCon in steals per game, steals, assists per game, and assists.
  • Atwell is nationally ranked 35th in three-point percentage (40.5) and 45th in total three-point field goals made (62).
  • Brown-Jones is nationally ranked 17th in points per game (20.8), 22nd in free throws (120), 31st in free throw attempts (15), 45th in field goal percentage (56.8).
  • Three Spartans are averaging double figures, including Brown-Jones who is contributing 20.8 points a game, Keyshaun is averaging 14.5 points a game, and Atwell is averaging 10.9 points per game.
  • Keyshaun most recently earned his second SoCon Player of the Week award (Feb. 5 and Nov. 20), and Brown-Jones earned the honor on November 27 and January 22.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll and fourth in the Media Poll. They received one first-place vote in the Coaches' Poll.
  • Keyshaun and Brown-Jones were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon team.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
  • Samford's lone conference loss this season is to Furman, 78-68.
  • Samford is outscoring opponents, 87.8-74.6.
  • The Bulldogs hold the edge in rebounds per game over their opponents, 37.0-35.4.
  • Four are averaging double figures this season, including Achor Achor with 15.7, A.J. Staton-McCray with 12.8, Jaden Campbell with 10.5, and Jermaine Marshall with 10.3.
  • Samford currently leads the Southern Conference in scoring (87.8 ppg.), scoring margin (+13.2), field goal percentage (.494), three-point field goal percentage (.404), three-pointers made per game (10.3), turnover margin (3.83), assists (18.61 pg.) and steals (10.96 pg.).
  • Achor is also leading the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
  • The Bulldogs are ranked nationally in the top 10 in 10 categories: second in three point percentage (40.4), fourth in winning percentage (87.0), scoring offense (87.8), fastbreak points (17.17), fifth in assists per game (18.6), bench points per game (35.20), steals per game (11.0), sixth in effective field goal percentage (0.575), eighth in turnovers forced per game (10.3), and 10th in three pointers per game (10.3).
  • Rylan Jones is nationally ranked second in assist/turnover ration (4.21).
 
RECORD VS. THE BULLDOGS
UNCG is 20-15 in the overall series.
Samford won the first game of the series earlier this year, 79-70. Brown-Jones scored 20 points, while Kobe tallied 15 points.
 
SCOUTING THE MOCS
  • The Mocs will first visit VMI on Thursday, February 8 before coming to Greensboro.
  • Chattanooga has lost to Samford twice and UNCG once for its three losses.
  • The Mocs most recently lost to Samford, 78-56.
  • Chattanooga has the edge in points per game against its opponents, 78.5-70.8, as well as, rebounds per game, 36.9-34.0.
  • Sam Alexis leading the team with 9.1 rebounds per game.
  • Trey Bonham is pacing the Mocs with 17.2 points per game.
  • Honor Huff is averaging 15.8 points per game this season, while Jan Zidek is averaging 11.7 and Alexis is averaging 11.5 points per game.
  • The Mocs are nationally ranked seventh in three point attempts per game (29.5), 11th in three pointers per game (10.3), 21st in effective field goal percentage (0.559), and 37th in defensive rebounds per game (27.74).
  • Alexis is nationally ranked 13th in blocks (52) and 19th in blocks per game (2.26).
  • Huff is nationally ranked 16th in three point attempts (183).
 
RECORD VS. MOCS
UNCG has the advantage, 28-27.
The two teams met earlier this season in Chattanooga, where UNCG took the win 70-54 on January 13.
