GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell in its Southern Conference (SoCon) opener on Friday afternoon to Mercer, 5-2 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium
HOW IT HAPPENED
Julien Peissel started off the day by throwing five strikeouts in the first two innings for both teams to stay scoreless after two.
Mercer was the first to get on the board after Jackson Cherry hit a home run to center field, giving the Bears the 1-0 lead.
Peissel added four more strikeouts in the game for a career high of nine strikeouts.
The Bears chipped in for four more runs in the game with one apiece in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings for the 5-0 lead over the Spartans.
UNCG got on the board with two runs in the ninth inning after
Caleb Cozart shot his 11
th home run of the season to right center for two RBI, bringing himself and
Jake Ogden across home plate. However, Mercer was able to walk away with the 5-2 win over the Spartans.
NOTES:
- Peissel led both teams with his career high nine strikeouts.
- Ogden and Aidan Brewer led the Spartans with two hits apiece on the day.
- Mitchell Smith led UNCG on the field with 10 total putouts.
- The Spartans tallied a total of six hits on the day.
