SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell short in a back-and-forth battle in its final game of the series against Wofford, 8-7 on Sunday at Russell C. King Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leading off the game for the Spartans,
Jeremy Wolf doubled down the left field line on a 2-2 count. Next up, with
Aidan Brewer in the batter's box and Wolf on second base, Wofford's pitcher, Mike Eggert threw to the second basemen in an attempt to catch Wolf stealing. However, the play resulted in two throwing errors from the Terriers, allowing Wolf to advance to third and then run home for UNCG to take the 1-0 lead.
The Terriers tallied their first run of the day in their half of the first inning to tie the game at one run apiece.
The Spartans regained the lead in the second inning after
Mitchell Smith tallied his second homer of the season, going to left field (2-1).
UNCG took a two-run advantage in the third inning when
Caleb Cozart recorded a base hit to left field, sending
Aidan Brewer home from third base (3-1).
Wofford was able to take the lead in the bottom half of the third inning. First, the Terriers tied the game off a two-run home run and then took the lead off a double to right center (4-3).
Zachary Walsh tied the ball game in the fourth inning after recording his second homer of the season on a 1-1 pitch count (4-4).
The Terriers tacked on another run in the fourth inning for the 5-4 lead. However, UNCG quickly responded once again when
Luke Holland flew out to right field, scoring Cozart from third base, tying the game once again (5-5).
After both teams stayed scoreless in the sixth inning,
Caleb Cozart notched his 15
th home run of the season in the seventh, giving UNCG the 6-5 lead over the Terriers.
Wofford tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning to take the 7-6 lead. However, the Spartans were able to tie the game in the ninth inning when
GC Jarman singled to right field to score
Jake Ogden (7-7).
The Terriers claimed the walk-off win when Dixon Black flew out to right field, scoring Jack Renwick for the 8-7 victory.
NOTES:
- Wofford had three errors to UNCG's one.
- The Spartans led with 12 hits.
- Cozart paced the Spartans with two runs, three hits and two RBI.
- Cozart, Smith and Walsh each recorded a homer in the game.
- Jarman led the team with seven putouts on the field.
- Jay Miller and Brandon Hudson paced UNCG on the bump with two strikeouts apiece.
